My Road to Reading Comprehension

speed-reading-Throughout elementary school, junior high and high school, I was forced to come up with a wide variety of excuses for my poor reading comprehension. When my fifth-grade teacher had us read our favorite poem aloud to the class, I stumbled over the words and lost serious self-esteem. It was clear that this wasn’t a question of intelligence as I excelled at math and science and enjoyed reading novels at home.

Later, in high school, I began telling people that I was a “hands-on” learner, but this sounded lame and untrue even to me. Just as I had always suspected, becoming a fast, sophisticated reader was just a matter of practice and training techniques. I began taking an online speed reading course, and within weeks my quickness and comprehension had improved exponentially. It’s an asset that has made me much happier and more employable.
